What do blank, null, undetermined, and zero mean?

Last updated: June 21, 2026

Short answer

Blank, null, undetermined, and zero are not the same thing. Null or blank usually means Kernel did not determine a safe value. Undetermined is the explicit uncertainty state when evidence is incomplete or conflicting. Zero should only be treated as a real value when the field definition allows zero.

Check this first

  • Which field is blank, null, undetermined, or zero?
  • Does the field support an undetermined value?
  • Is zero meaningful for this field?
  • Does reasoning explain why no value was returned?
  • Is the value missing from Kernel or only missing from Account?

What to send support

  • Account ID and field API name.
  • Current value and reasoning.
  • Expected value and evidence.
  • Whether this appears on one record or many.
